the ice chest on the hunter 31 supposedly drains into the bilge , does it it just drain into the space under the floor and make its way to the bilge or is there suppose to be a drain line carrying the water directly to the bilge?

Icebox Drain

I have a 1992 Hunter 28 with the same type of drain. I poured water into the icebox and observed the water draining directly into the bilge (near the pump). I would suggest removing the floor boards over the bilge areas and pouring water into the icebox to see if you can see where it comes out. If it drains into an unknown area, I would consider putting in some hose that directs the water (or spilled milk) directly into the bilge where you can clean the area easily.

Sooner or later.

Jeff: I think that sooner or later the water makes it to the bilge on the H'31. I would have thought that they would have run a hose from the bottom of the box into the bilge so the water would not accumulate in the grid. Unfortunately there is no hose, so the water accumulates. I sugggest that you make up a pail of hot soapy water with a cup or so of bleach. Pour this in the box. Take the boat out and let it slosh around. It will help clean out the area. You can also dump a bucket behind the engine pan and another one under the vberth. This gets to most of the areas that need cleansing.

Mine has a hose

My 1985 H-31 has a hose installed on the drain that lays by the aft end of the main bilge area

Use a stopper

Another reason NOT to drain your ice box into the bilge is that an open drain will remove both the water and the cold!. The heavy cold air just flows into your bilge and warm air is drawn into the box from the top. We use a rubber stopper and just sponge out the water every other day. Use could also put an "S" loop water trap in the drain hose.

ice box drain fix

Jeff, I installed a foot pump on my drain pipe and a spigot at my sink. This works very well. I can send pictures and details if you would like. Have a good Thanksgiving. Greg

Well, we agree on something!!!

The bilge is not the place to send this swill. We all seem to have our favorite methods. Mine involves the requisite stoppers. But the freezer and fridge drain hoses are teed together and the drain hose extends past the bilge to the shower sump. The sludge is easier for us, on our boat, to get rid of that way.
