H30 1992 leak - compression post / mast

Since I bought my boat a few years ago, I have had a very minor leak in the winter only - water coming in somewhere around the base of the mast / top of the compression post. This winter the rate of leak has increased pretty significantly, so I'm looking into causes/solutions more diligently.Does anybody know what's inside the compression post? It seems to be holding water in it; I would like to drill a hole at the base of it to let water drain into the bilge until I get the leak stopped. Any suggestions for what might be leaking and how to stop it?Thanks in advance for help.

Hi Sherry, our boat is a different model...
