Has anyone who owns a H28 (1992 vintage) replaced the fixed "sky light" in the main cabin with an opening hatch? The sky light is the one just aft of the mast base. If so, what size and how did you do it? Thanks.

Hatches on 28.5

No one seems to be responding with experience on a 28 ; however, for what it's worth, the earlier 28.5's all had a mid bay operable hatch in place of your 'skylight'. I replaced the original plastic hatches on a 28.5 with a Bomar low profile aluminum framed hatches; I believe the mid bay opening was about 9" square and the Bomar may have been about 9.5" at the frame flanges so I had to slightly open up the 'hole' edges with an orbital sander, then re-seal the plywood edges with Marinetex. If you have a finished surface inside the fixed plexiglas skylight, I'd measure that opening and match the closest Bomar size to it. Open it up slightly if necessary, provided you have at least one inch of flat surface all around the outer topside edge of the opening. Pilot drill and use a countersink bit at the new screw holes so as not to chew up the gel coat and set the hatch flanges in Life Caulk with newspapers set up below to catch what drips out. It's easy enough to use velcrow strips and fabric screening to make an inexpensive removeable screen to get the most out of your new ventilation improvements. good Luck!

Operable Hatch

Since we've actually sailed our 1986 28.5 with the hatch for 20 years, with an eight part boom vang fastened to the mast tang and a 3:1 cunningham fastened to the same mast tang, both above and forward of the hatch, we've never had a problem. The boom vang's lower fiddle block would scratch across the top of the hatch only if the vang were left very loose dragging acrosss the hatch. I asume those posting realize that the hatch opening faces aft; if not just log on to the 28.5 web site and look at any of several photos in the Gallery. Check: www.huntertwentyeightfive.com

H28 Skylight issue

I was looking at putting in a hatch also but did not find one that would fit without having to redo glass work on the coach roof. Also the vang is a problem. So I decided to put in a solar vent into the hatch instead. I bought on at the boat show and plan to instal in the Spring. Rob
