Maybe a different boat

I have an older H 27 and have had several other boats. THe Hunter is the beast cruiser I've had for the money and a great weekend and short trip sailor. Can't beat the enjoyment. However, I don't think is really set up for ocean crossing without a lot of beefing up. Thats not to say you wouldn't make it if all goes well but what do you do when... Remember there are old sailors and bold sailors but very few old bold sailors. Just my opinion.

Check the weather

and keep checking the weather. It's only 90 miles from Miami to Bimini due east. Depart before midnight and you'll be there in the morning. Just short hops through the islands with lots of good stop overs. Again, mind the weather, enjoy your shallow draft, and go for it.

Hunter 27 off shore.

I agree the Hunter 27 needs beefing up for off shore. It has a capsize coeficient of 1.96. Anything under 2.00 is generally considered safe for off shore. The angle of return is 120 degrees according to the Hunter engineers. Still a lot depends upon the captain, his skills etc. Plan carefully and cover all the possible things that could come up. Talk to others who have made the trip. An ounce of prevention is still worth a pound of cure, onshore or off.
