mast puzzle In the Kenyon mast of my 82 H27 there seems to be a block or something; at least there is a noise as when a block rolls up and down on a halyard when there is motion in the boat. I can't figure that one out. If there is something there, how does one make sure the halyard is threaded the right way? I dropped down a second jib halyard and it ended up in the tube for the wires. How does one avoid that? I thought the mast was just one hollow tube, but apparently not so. So, just WHAT is in there. ghm

My 27 is an '84, but I can't imagine they're all that different. Inside the hollow oval pipe (the mast) is a smaller pipe mounted to the leading egde, this houses the wires. A total of 4 halyards run from 4 fixed blocks at the mast head to 4 fixed blocks in the mast step. The step is mounted to the deck and does not come off with the mast. Last year I also had small bird's nest in my mast, but I got rid of it this year. I wasn't really using it anyway. I hope this helps. Dylan

Related question

I have been meaning to install a mast hound and boom bail to attach a much needed boom vang but I'm concerned that the screw ends may tear into the halyards or cables. It seems from prvious response that the cables are isolated at the leading end but I would still have the halyards to deal with. Any ideas or comments? I only have two halyards at present but it would be a good idea and intend to run another two spares.
