H27 deck drains/scuppers

"Baroque" (1982 H27) had water in the cabin from this past winter. It seems that this was not uncommon in this area. Anyway, one diagnosis was leaking hoses that connect the deck drains with the thru-hulls. I tried one and, sure enough, a slow leak. My question is for those who understand such things, why this design? There ain't much deck to hold water. There is a natural flow fore to aft. The drains are small and clog easily. It seems adding a drain, hose, and thru-hull was an unnecessary expense. Any opinions? Andy

Might be a design for all configurations

Hey Andy, I kinda wondered the same when I started working on an H-27 project boat. The boat loses its tilt with the engine out and the mast off. Maybe they floated the hull and noticed standing water on the deck before they added these components. If you are a conspiracy theorist, you might wonder if someone owned large stock holdings in a nautical fittings supply house! haha Jack

Our '77 model doesn't have these fittings

A previous owner cut a groove at the aft end of the toerail to encourage draining, but we still get pooling there. Not a big issue - this doesn't lead to any water inside the cabin on our boat. David Lady Lillie

Deck drains

My 79 didn't come with deck drains and i keep thinking of installing same as there is standing water there most of the time.I would be glad to put up with the slight problems involved in having them.

Where?

My H37C has deck scuppers but they are amidships. Water sloshing back along the toerail might find the hole. But standing water collects farther aft. Probably depends upon how the boat is loaded. Maybe if I fill the water tanks and add 100' foot of anchor chain the scuppers will be in the right place. :)

Deck Drains

I just purchased my 1984 H-27 in December, so haven't sailed ehr yet, but while cleaning the deck just last weekend I noticed the drains located on each side of the boat's cockpit just inside the toerails.I thought it was very interesting/strange at the same time, so I have not been able to attest to their use- fullness, as the boat is on stands. I'll send in a comment during the sailing season. I'll keep an eye out for leaks in the meantime.
