I am the new proud owner of a 2000' Hunter 260 with a outboard Yamaha 9.9 with Yamaha remote control mounted adjacent to the seat.

When I was returning to my slip yesterday, the cable that controls the fwd/reverse failed that resulted in near catastrophe. I tried feverishly to reverse the motor in an attempt to slow down but as I applied pressure to the control, I continued to accelerate forward. The quick action by a deckhand averted by boat from crashing into the dock. Very scary.

The cable jacket was broken and allowed the cable within to deflect in a way that caused forward movement. The break in the cable jacket is located at the axis where the motor rotates when the motor is lifted under sail.

Please inspect the cables for your safety.

Other than almost wrecking by new vessel with only 3 hours of use, I love my H260!

Regards,

Generally the cables are 3300 series cables which should be looked at once a year and inspected where the cable was broken or worn thru due to some chaffing which needs to be remedied.

Under those conditions don't forget you can kill the motor. My remote throttle has both a key and a kill switch with lanyard. If you have your hand already on the throttle, its a quick motion to either.
