In tight maneuvering situations, it is sometimes necessary to turn the outboard while turning the rudder. This is not an easy task; trying to turn the wheel while bending over to reach the outboard. In quick changes, sometimes the prop may actually hit the rudder. It seems like there should be a way to link the rudder (or rudder post) to the outboard and turn both the rudder and motor in unison. Any suggestions?

Mike, They make one.

I saw an article yesterday in the back of Sail mag selling just what your looking for. It looks very simple. Probably could build it yourself. I'll get the article tonight and put the info in this post. Ted

lots in archive...

This is what I did to connect the rudder to outboard (copied from a previous post): I made a connector using two pintles I found in the clearence section at WM bolted on each end of a 1" x 1" x 2' piece of hardwood. On one end, the pin points up and and fits into the metal slotted piece on the front of our Honda outboard secured with a spring clip. The other end has the pin pointing down and slides into a hole I drilled on the cast part of the rudder (the part that the steering cables are attached). It has worked great all summer and makes manuevering at the marina a breeze (it needs to be removed when tilting the motor up). Total cost: ~$25

Make your own

I have posted a sketch of one we made for our 260. The cost was a fraction of what you may pay for a factory one. It works perfect!
