what are the must haves for outfitting a new 260 for single-handed sailing. With not much left in the budget any help on what really makes sailing it alone easier is appriciated--boat has wheel steering.

Wheel brake or Auto pilot

Something to steer for you while away from the helm -- perhaps a wheel brake or better yet an auto pilot. Fair winds, Tom

Wheel, stern rail seats, roller furling(CDI) and bimini are what we include as standard and strongly recommned that you consider this. do not forget the two squirells in the cage for motor power. Just kidding Craxy Daveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Work arounds

A wheel is not critical for sailing alone on a 26 nor are sternrail seat or roller furling. Using some bungee cords a block, and line, you can rig a remote control for the tiller. The 26 has lots of seating room in the cockpit so sternrail seat are extraneous. They are best suited for guests. Roller furling makes using the jib easier when single handed, but you do not need to sail with the jib on the 26. In a brisk wind and after reefing the main, the jib is the next to go as the wind picks up. When I've sailed our 26 alone, that's what I've done. Practicing when help is available allows you to smooth out your techniques. Mark
