Can anyone tell me the total weight of an 1994 H26. Specs say 5000 lbs but does that include 2000 for the ballast or not?

If I recall around 2800# w/o ballast and...

...close to 5000# with. This is according to the spec sheet. Remember this is w/o motor/fuel/beer/food and so on. alan

See specs on Hunterowners...

...link below. Displacement of 5000# includes 2000# water ballast.

Why do you want to know? Are you talking displacement or towing wt. My H260 weighs 5740/trailer.

Weight for H26

Maby I should have made myself more clear. Yes I want to purchas a truck that will be able to pull the H26. So do I look for a truck that will pull 5000lb or 7000 lb.? Thanks.

Towing

You want two things in the truck you buy. A long wheel base and heavy duty towing package. While neither is a "requirement" so to speak, if you do much towing, you're better off with more truck, than less. I've towed my H26 with a V6 Blazer, and a V8 pickup, both with short wheelbases. The longer wheel base will give you a smoother ride and better control IMHO. Also, if you'll be towing over any appreciatable distance, a transmission cooler would be a good investment. Can vary

The heaviest my ’98 H26 tipped the scales was 6,995 pounds. That was with trailer, motor on the transom and food and gear for four people for a month. Last fall, bringing the boat home for it’s usual Summer moorage – 6,000 pounds. The transmission cooler is a must. It doesn’t take a 3/4 ton pickup (or whatever) to haul the boat. Your not carrying weight, just pulling. My half ton 4x4 pickup and 5.9 liter gas engine does a good job. And you’ll have enough junk in the rear of the vehicle to weight it down so that the boat isn’t pushing your rig. Make sure your trailer brakes are in good shape however, and take your time.

Gear ratios

I'm new to towing so I was surprised when I looked at the owner's manual in a rental SUV that a house guest arived in once (forget what the vehicle was exactly). Given the same engine (V6 or small V8 - I forget that too), the manual showed towing limits of 3000lbs or 6500lbs (more or less) purely depending on the gear ratio of the differential. I imagine engine size must make a difference too, but look into this gear ratio business - it seems an important factor. The lower ratio that gives higher towing limits probably gives you less gas mileage, so there are several variables to consider. Find people who know what they're talking about -- I don't, but nobody has mentioned gear ratios yet.

Tow Rating link

Here is a good link that has tow ratings for most major models over that last few years. You will notice that some vehicles have wide ranges, the 3 main issues being engine size, transmission and gear ratio. Manual trannies usually have a lower rating and the rating usually increase with a lower gear in the rear end. Four wheel drive usually drops the rating a couple hundred pounds, but would be nice to have on a slippery ramp. Being able to pull the trailer is one thing, being able to stop it is another issue. I can tell you first hand, it is a very, very, very bad feeling when you need to stop your rig and you can't because the trailer is pushing you down the road. A very bad feeling.

Another interesting tidbit…

When looking at pickups in ’98 to tow my H26 – Two new Dodge Ram Quadcab 4x4’s, one a half ton (1500 model), the other a three quarter ton (2500 model). Same engine, transmission and gears. The half ton had more towing capacity (not to be confused with hauling capacity) than the three quarter ton. I’m assuming that it had to do with overall weight, as the larger towing capacity was nearly identical to the increase in weight of the three quarter ton vehicle.

Discrepancies in spec. weight

I am having the sam problem finding the 'true' weight of a Hunter 22. Hunter manual sez 2600 lbs displacement and 1200 lbs ballast. However, it seems most people 'add' these numbers to come up with a 'total' weight. I thought ballast was included in total displacement weight.?!

Towing

I tow my H26 with a Jeep Liberty V6 with 215hp and the towing package. My first trip was to tow it home from Pensacola Fl to Michigan (1,000 miles) which included the mountains. The Jeep has plenty of power but the boat does tend to push it around some under certain conditions.
