Bought a 2005 mercury 9.9 ob electric start. Works great but due to the design I can not raise the prop clear of the water. The handle gets in the way. Is it possible to put in longer bolts and some spacers to move the mount about two inches further from the stern? Will the bolts be able to hold the mount with motor? What, if any backing plate is there? Thanks!

Would This Work?

Slide a piece 2X4 between the mount and the outboard see if that gets you the additional clearance.

b4 tilting look for a web strap between mount and engine

be advised that a peice of webbing may keep the motor straight when tilting it if you wish to tilt with the motor turned you need to remove this web strap so it wont pull the motor straight. i have a 06 9.9 merc prokicker and while tight it tilts ok on my h240. fair winds

another approach

I had a similar problem with a 9.9 Honda on a Macgregor 26C, the prop would not clear the water because the handle would not fold past 90 degrees, I found the tab that prevented the handle from passing 90 degrees, and whacked it off with an angle grinder, then the handle could fold far enough to clear the back wall of the motor well..worked like a charm

outboard bracket

Me think you have the 26, not the 26. If you can see the back end of the Hunter 240 and 260, there were extended metal brackets and a starboard board versus wood. Once you put that on, it is not a problem. The Mercury engine was primarily built by Tohatsu which is the same as Nissan. Ask Phil Herring at How chandlrey if he can get this for you, If not, contact me at davecondon@mindspring.com and I will tell you what to do.
