Purchased a 95 h26. Raised mast for the first time. Main stay has roller furler. Had to tighten turnbuckle all the way. Still seems loose and the mast foot is not sitting flush. Mast seems to be leaning aft. Attached photo to determine mast angle. My 23.5 did not have furler so it is new for me. Please help:(

Keep in mind the tension of the front stay is determined by the side stays. The length of the front stay determines the rake of the mast.

This is the furler attached. Turnbuckle is maxed out. Please look at the original pic I posted. Are the side stays in the correct position? The owners manual looks opposite! Thanks:)

What's Coming Off Your Spreader?

Hey Pleas, maybe it's the overhead power line holdin' back your mast! ;)
Something doesn't look right on your original photo. What's that coming off your spreader? Is that a lazy jack line split off your side stay? BrianW

Yes, there is a lazy jack installed. The pic is deceiving. It is centered between spreaders. The power lines are many many feet above mast :redface: Are the side shrouds in the original photo in the correct position? The owners manual shows them opposite of the way I purchased boat! PS... Happy New Year!

Pleas, this is from a 5/22/02 post in the archives. Tim says:
"In looking closely at the rigging diagram in my owners manual ('97 h26), I noticed that the sidestays cross each other rather than running parallel. That is, the upper stay comes straight down and attaches to the forward u-bolt and the lower crosses behind the upper to attach at the aft u-bolt. I talked to Hunter and they verified that the "crossover" arrangement is correct. I stepped the mast today and can report that I'm able to get considerably more tension on the lower shroud with this arrangement. Greg at Hunter did say it was important to have it right. "

I hope this helps. BrianW

Wow, thanks Brian. The pic appears to have them crossed yet the previous owner of my boat had them backwards. Thanks again. Do you know if the mast bend is greater on the h260 as compared to the h26?

Pleas;

I will call you once I return home this week. The set up for the 26 and 260 are the same. I am out of town for the holidays and also doing research on the first train used in modern warfare moving troops to the front which has been interesting

I owned a 95 Hunter 26 10 years ago and found that the boat responded very strongly to rig tuning including proper mast rake and bend. It is worth the cost to buy a "Loos Gauge" and properly tune the mast. Record your settings and it is easy to do.

I too have a 26, be sure your side stays holding the mast are not short due to the lower fittings kinking while raising. Check at the side stay turn buckle. I hope you have as much fun with yours as we have had with ours.

Could it be possible the last owner had the furler connected to the u-bolt on the front of the boat and not where i am showing it connected in pic? When I first stepped the mast the furler had another connector attached that made it even longer.

Usually...

...they put that tang on there so the roller furling hub clears the deck – which does require the front stay to be shortened to make up the difference. But, as I had mentioned earlier, with a fractional rig, it's the side stays that tension the front stay. Note the swept back spreaders.
