I'm sorry to say but the June 29th storm claimed my Hunter 26. :cry: The anchor was was no match for the very powerful storm and I wound up on the rocks near St. Mary's MD. Too much damage to repair and insurance adjuster has totaled the boat. I have enjoyed reading the posts here over the years. It will be a while before I decide on a replacement. Freedom was a great boat and served me well for the 11 years I had her.

Sorry to hear this. I hope the insurer does right by you.
If I may ask, what kind of anchor?

Very sad. :cry: Glad to hear no one was hurt.

I would like to hear about your mooring (anchor) as well. Maybe some learnings for us.

Thanks,

Shanker

Additional details.

The anchor used was the stock Danforth anchor which Hunter supplied. I am not sure of the weight. It has been adequate in the past and I have experienced other storms at anchor.

Problem was that south winds were predicted and this anchorage has pretty good protection for winds in that direction. With that in mind, I tucked in within 100 yards of shore in less than 10 feet of water. My rode consisted of 80 feet of rope and 8 feet of chain. I thought anchor was pretty well set. The wind shifted much in the early evening, but not especially strong. Just before storm, wind was from the south, not strong, but boat reflecting the wind direction. Storm hit very fast with NORTH winds. There was no building of winds. Within seconds of initial winds change, it was GALE force winds - and hitting me sideways. Bimini straps broke first, and before I could get bimini tied down, roller furling line broke, opening sail and I was moving fast - great south wind anchorage means lee shore from unprotected north wind. It was incredibly fast - within minutes (5 max, maybe as little as 2) from gentle south wind to on the shore rip rap from north winds. 6 other boats at anchorage, 2 collided - one also found shore. Due to injuries, they called 911. Rescue personal found me first and insisted I get off boat - I'm not sure what I could have done at that point, but I was reduced to spectator and it was not a pretty sight.

Very sorry to hear this Lance.

I've always like a Danforth on the bay. The one complaint I know of with them is the inability to reset with a switch in direction. Sure sounds like that happened here. That storm moved a window AC unit in our bedroom. With the speed & force of the storm it's doubtful any other type of anchor would have done better.

Glad you're ok & I hope the injuries on the other boat weren't bad.

Lance;

I got your email and glad to hear you were ok as I too was affected by the storms several weeks ago when a twister went over us. It was a sick feeling seeing trees down across tents and campers as I was searching for anyone injured. Thank goodness no one was hurt. Although you had to abandon ship, you can always replace a boat but not you. Thank you for erring on the side of safety.
