I use my boat off shore and am thinking of putting a 15HP on it. The HONDA 15 is the samr wight and block as the 9.9. Also they make it in a 28" shaft. This will keep the prpoe in the water.
Ed;I did have a 15 hp Honda and found that the engine produced too much power for the boat as the bow would raise up and according to my knot meter, speed was reduced. Wish I had a smaller engineI have heard Dave pretty much can best help along with others.Steve
I've got a Honda 15 on my '94 H26 and I'm very happy with it. It probably is more power than normally necessary, but I'd rather have it there when I need it, like in a current, head winds, heavy chop, etc. As far as over power, I probably generally only run about 1/4 -1/3 throttle, but I figure I'm getting great gas mileage. Good luck.
Do it.. running a 15 HP(same weight as the 9.9). Like the extra power reserve, the 28" still will cavitate in heavy chop no matter what you try, but not bad either. Backing down with the 15 is a bit easier with the extra horses on your side. (also cleans the bottom, Ha, Ha!) Been running it since 95, (trailering too) with no apparent structural problems or stress cracks around the wood transom mount.
I've got the 15 an all is well. Reaches hull speed at about 1/3 throttle. For offshore, I think the exta power is good security. I've never even come close to going full throttle, but I can't imagine that you could do much damage to the boat if you did. The pounding of high seas seems much more stressfull than exta HP.
I know if the 15 is not set at the wright angle the boat will plow , and if you try to go above hull speed (about 6.8 k) ti will plow also. But in a tide, current, wind, fighting you, you'll will be glad for the HP. My boat is probele about 6000 lbs with gear and all. I am looking for more tourk than speed. Also in going to a new one and the price is only about $200 more.
