The 20" is the minimum for these boats. I only do inland sailing, so for me the 20" is just fine. If I were on some potentially rougher waters I might want the 25".Is that 20 inch long enough. My last boat had the tohatsu 25 in 6hp,great motor.

We use to sail on the sassafras river,Bohemia river and North East river. My 23.5 came with the Johnson Sailmaster 8hp 25" length, which has always been plenty of power for me in the upper bay. And the motor is very easy to reach, shift and control on the 23.5 without added accessories.
Hi Sailmaster39, I have sailed on the Bohemia, Elk and North East rivers, as well as the open bay. But now we stick close to home around the Susquehanna Flats near Havre de Grace. We use to sail on the sassafras river,Bohemia river and North East river.
Where do you sail.

We spent our honeymoon on the Susquehanna Flats many years ago.Hi Sailmaster39, I have sailed on the Bohemia, Elk and North East rivers, as well as the open bay. But now we stick close to home around the Susquehanna Flats near Havre de Grace.
Hi Rick20"s is generally enough and would get you through most conditions. I found an extension kit and increased mine to a 25" shaft.
