H240: sail measurements

Hello,

I could use some help as I'm trying to order some sails but do not have access to my boat/sails. I have the Hunter 240 water ballast boat.

Has anyone ordered a main and/or 110 Jib and has the dimensions?

If you're buying new sails you shouldn't need the sail dimensions. The loft either has them, can get them, or will work with the rig dimensions which are easy to find.

If you're buying used sails, then you need the actual sail dimensions to compare to the available sails. However, a used main will probably need some alterations to fit your rig.

Another loft?

I would consider another loft. I've never talked to a sailmaker who didn't have specs for high volume designs like the 240, or didn't know how to get them. Their response would trouble me.

Same here. It's certainly no problem to ask for them here, but that is unusual request from the loft.

The Hunter 240 was introduced in 1998 and production ceased around 2006. As the who had alot to do with this boat, everyone is correct that sail lofts have measurements for the stock Hunter 240 and many other boats. When a sail loft does not have them, it makes me concerned particularly if they make you have to get them. Hunter basically turned over retail sales parts for this store's site and you will find that they have good pricing and quality sails. They also stand behind their product. why not give them a chance spacetiger. I am curious who your boat was orignally sold by.

I checked this site - even this Hunter site requires some measurements. They will tell you what you need to measure AFTER you buy the sails.

These are the exact words:
This sail requires measuring. Specs, rig, hardware, and other factors are not the same from boat to boat, even boats of the same year and model. To ensure your sail fits properly we will ask you to take a few simple measurements. Detailed measuring instructions are provided after purchase

I did not realize it was this hard to order sails for a production boat.

It really is a benefite to you to make sure about the measurments which I will not go into. Simply lay the sail down and take measurements is pretty simple.

I happen to have the measurements for the original 110% Doyle hank-on jib on my 1998 240. If you have roller furling they will be different. These were with the sail stretched to full size. Note also there is a 9" wire leader at the tack.
Luff 23' 10"
Leech 21' 2"
Foot 10' 1"

Just make sure of the length of the forestay which is highly suggested.

Guys, differences in furler configuration/brand/installation can easily change a sail size. Headsails more than mains, but I never have a sail made without measuring for it.

And measure the RIG, not the old sail. It has stretched in some places, and sometimes even shrunk in others. That's the reason you are buying new ones!

Our worksheet on a common boat like this is more of fail safe check, as there is a lot of money involved and sometimes, not often, but sometimes the rig has been changed out.
