i just used murictic acid, (diluted 10:1) to clean the bottom of my boat but it looks like it melted the carpet on the bunks....or some of it. i would like to put a sawhorse, or something much stouter, under the transom and drop the bunks one at a time and check to be sure the carpet didn't fuse to the hull and replace the carpet. looks to me like with the boat in a 3 point support, (bow, one bunk, transom, and of course keel), that this wouldn't be much of a problem. has anyone done this? i'd hate to go attempt to put the boat in the water and find out it was now part of the trailer! besides, if the acid did that to the carpet i want to be sure....soon....that it didn't damage the fiberglass under the bunks.

That’s the exact method I used

William to paint the bottom of my H23. I lowered the tong as far as I could, used a VERY stout sawhorse with a bag of sand between the horse and the transom. I was able to lower the bunks to paint under them. I marked each bunk to get it back to the same height. Next time I’ll measure and mark as it was hard to see the marks while jacking the bunks with a floor jack. Bob S/V I Miss Lisa

Another way

Here's a link to a photo forum entry that shows the boat supported by 4x4s. I've bottom-painted my boat twice doing it this way. It's very stable if you're careful. Mac S.V. Boodle

thanks guys...

i may use a combination of the 2 methods. lower the bow till i can get some kind of 4x4 "sawhorse' under the transom, and then raise the bow with my floor jack, and use 1 or 2 4x4s to keep things from wanting to tilt off to the side i lower the bunk on and do them one at a time

Borrow Power Boat Stands

William: I have done this before, borrow a couple of steel power boat stands (with broad plates) from your local marina to support (and lift) the boat off the bunks---one side at a time. Oh, and next time try using vinegar instead of muriatic acid. - Kevin.
