Hi All, So, I am really close to being able to reef my 1987 H23 (Z-Spar). I ran a line through the boom to the aft end and must now address the mast end of the sail. In a reefing dry run, it appears that the reefpoint at the forward end of the sail wants to hook/attach near the mast/gooseneck. I cannot find the "W" shaped ram's head that fits(?) in the hole at the gooseneck. Am I correct in assuming I need this thingy? Does anyone know a source of such a device? Does anyone offer any other solution for attaching the forward end? Do people use the reefpoints located mid-sail when reefed? I am guessing I would run thin lines through these holes only when reefed and stow them otherwise. Thanks in advance, Richard H23 "Invictus" PS I will be at Mystic Seaport all weekend for the 25th Annual Sea Music Festival. Invictus will be tied up behind the main stage. Come by and say, "Hi!"

Reefing Your Sails

I have a Santana 21 with one reefing point on the Main. When you look at the sail, there should be a gromet partway up the luff of the sail -- that is where the reefing hook goes through. Reefing hooks are available from Boat/US and West Marine for about $10. They look like a curly pig's tail. There should also be a gromet on the leech of the sail that you tie a line to and run through a pully on the boom and then to a cleat on the boom. I always install the reefing line and the hook every time I go out because it is VERY difficult to rig that stuff WHEN you need to reef. To reef the sail you head upwind to take the pressure off the main, lower the sail and hook the luff gromet over the reefing hook and pull the reefing line so the leech of the sail is tight again. There should also be some ties that go through the sail so you can secure the bottom part of the sail to the boom. It is better to reef the sail sooner rather than later since it is easier to shake a reef than to put one in in high winds and rough seas. I have included a link to the BoatUS web page with the type of reefing hook you are looking for. Hope this helps.

Reefing h23

We have a 1986 h23 with a kenyon mast and it has hooks just above the gooseneck to hook the sail to. If you don't have these as was said you can get them at west marine. As for the ropes to tie down the sail I put some line in and tied knots on each side and they just stay in the sail. It doesn't seem to hurt anything and most of the other boats have them set up like this. When making them make sure you have enough rope. I cut them a little short the first time and had to get a longer piece. Our main sail only has one reef point put some sails have two or three so I am not sure what type you have. I doubt that you have three or even two unless is was special ordered that way. Rob Morton
