I was just looking for the tripod for H23 mast lowering, and found this photo...The text says they're running with 25 knots of wind. I find it hard to believe. Let's make a contest out of this and guess how much wind there really is ! I guess 15 knots, max. (no whitecaps)

Where are the WHITE CAPS

In my racing and sailing experence I would have seen some white caps and waves at that wind speed. Where are they? I say based on what I see in the Picture 12 knots.

Why reefed???

I gotta go with Cliff or maybe even a little less. That's awfully calm water.

25 kts....I think "knot"!

Position of boom, mainsheet and jib sheet suggests reaching, not running. The boat should be heeled quite a bit more if they were reaching in 25 kts. of wind, especially with one of the crew standing on the lee side like that! I would hate to be in his position if there was a sudden gust and the boat heeled, not to mention the very good chance of being whacked overboard by the boom if the helmsman were to ease the sheet and dump the main. My guess is no more than 12 kts., and probably less. Peter S/V Raven

Beaufort Scale

I agree, no whitecaps visible. According to our buddy, Mr. Beaufort, a minimum of twelve knots of wind is required to see whitecaps upwind. A minimum of 16 knots is required to see whitecaps down wind. Here, I can't see either, but I suspect there's a squall line just outside the picture, that we can't see. Yeah, yeah, that's it, that's the ticket! Here? I'm guessing 8-11 knots. He was probably reefed so he could stay close to his buddy in the J24. With full sails up, he probably would be way ahead of a J24. Yeah, yeah, that's it, that's the ticket stub. :)

8 knots I guess.

I looked again, and these guys are barely up to 8 knots, 9 maybe, 10 would take a whole six-pack to believe. Maybe I can even see a little blue smoke in the background there off to the left side of photo ?
