My first lesson learned: do more than cursory forum searching PRIOR to trying something you have not done before! Two failed attempts to raise mast before realizing I needed to use a Gin-Pole or something like that to provide angles which allow the mast to be pulled up.
My mast has no hole near the base where a gin pole can be seated. I saw a picture of a wooded home built pole which sat on the mast. It's base was cut out to seat on the mast. Still not sure how, when there is force applied down on the top of the pole, that it does not kick out to either side. Second question is about the hardware on top of the gin pole. What does the main halyard go through? Third question is using the main halyard....is that so the forestay is available to be connected when the mast is up? I assumed (bad move...I know) I would be using the forestay to pull mast up, pin mast at base, then secure forestay.
If anyone had the time to direct me to a more in-depth thread for a first time mast raiser to more fully understand how to accomplish this safely I would very much appreciate it. Hoping to launch next Thursday. Thanks!
