H23 main sail boom too low, Bimini top ordered!

I'm convinced my Mainsail is stretched! The end of the boom is so low it's like maybe three and half feet from the cockpit floor when running close hauled. Too much mast rake? (We plan to change that soon) pulling the luff tight up the mast doesn't help. It is the orginal sail that came with H23. Sails well in light air though! I ordered a Bimini top from the chandlery here on the site. My thinking is to have the foot of the main sail altered. Input please! thanks all! Denise.

duh!

yes, original sail! Kenyon mast. the boom attachment is no where near 6ft above the cockpit floor! Now I'm really perplexed! Even when the mainsheet is loose the boom hangs about 4ft and slightly downhill to the floor. I'll get some real measurments soon. need to find the original mainsail specs too. thanks Chris

I think he means it's two feet over his head when he's sitting down. No sail will stretch as you describe anyway. My bet either you have a replacement main or your mast is cocked backwards. Do you have a lot of weather helm? How far back does the halyard hang when unattached, in a calm? Those answers might help.

check the archives?

It could be hanging lower due to mast rake, but I think that the extra piece is intentional. I think my sail is original. I had mine to a sailmaker and the extra helps in certain winds. What I did though was had a flattening reef put in to take up approx 10 to 12" at the leech. I keep it in for casual cruising and take it out for more performance. the concept might not work with bimini though. Check the archives and see what's been said about adding a bimini to the H23. There has been lot's of past discussion on the low hanging booms in the past. I never got a sense it was right or wrong to have the boom hanging a little lower - that's why I didn't get my sail recut.

Boom Height

Hi Denise, I can't remember what year you boat is was it an 86? We have the same problem and I was thinking about having the main recut to fit a bimini. I will check out the suggestions made here as well. Can you let us know how the bimini worked out? I was going to order one in the next month or so. Rob S/V Euphoria

hey Bob

I've a 85 with swing keel. It's going to be a couple of weeks for the Bimini to arrive, (apparently they are made to order by the chandlery here) I'm pretty sure the sail will need fixin of some sort. When the top gets here we plan to pull the boat and do a bunch of things; new traveler, mast rake, fix some wood trim. Also I'm getting antsy to get the boat down to the chesapeake bay by trailer. must get over fear of towing.. must get over fear of towing.. must get over fear of towing.. *cry more later! Denise

New sail

I have a h23 85 with a Kenyon mast, UK Alan in Annapolis made a new sail for $900. The boom is 90 angle to the mast, and the Bimini we ordered from this website works great, 6 inches of clearance. It is well worth the investment. Preformance is 100% times better.

cut foot

The H23 definitely has a low hanging boom. I had the foot cut off of mine by UK Sailmakers a few years ago and they made it loose footed. The tack is the same but they took 10" off the clew. I've since replaced my main with a new mylar one I got a deal on but my old loose footed one is still in very good shape.

on checking

the luff and leech are actually tight... the sail still has allot of draft. (bag I call it) sounds like it needs work.. or replacement.. i was thinking of making a new hole in the top thingy that the halyard attaches too. thanks for all the advice all! Denise

Bimini is on!

Well, it's ok! not great but ok.. just something more in the way to get to the outboard. We will have to move the boom vang bail a few inches forward. I don't see a prob with that. don't think the main needs to be cut.. will determine that later.. too hot out there! fair winds! Denise
