Can anyone tell me how to assemble the bed in the main cabin on a 1985 H23. It appears that the floor boards come up and are placed vertical. My floor boards stick up aprox 1" above flush with the seat berths, these could be trimmed or notched to reduce these to flush ? Are the seat back cushions used on top of these once place verical or is there another piece of wood that I am missing which would lay on top of the floor boards/slats once place vertical ?..if this were true then the hooks on the back of the cushions would be in the way ? Can anyone provide help, a diagram or a prefered modification to make this bed functional. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. AJ

I don't know why the floorboards are sticking up an inch above flush with the seats. Yes, you do use the seatbacks for the mattress. I've found, though, that the seatbacks aren't really long enough to be useful. My First Mate and I have slept in the forward berth and on the seats on either side. The "mattress" restricts any useful movement in the cabin when it's set up anyway. I'll try to take a picture of the setup when I'm up there today. I need to take a picture of the hooks that hold the seatbacks on, too.

I really don't see why you should have to modify your floorboards or anything else to make it work. If at first it doesn't fit, use a bigger hammer! Oops, not really. Just find out why the boards aren't going all the way in the slots.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, I agree it doesn't appear to be very functional/comfortable and will be in the way and would only be for sleeping. My head (PP) has apparently been replaced with a taller version so the V berth cushions will not fit over it sooo looking at options before I replace a perfectly good but "to tall" PP.
I can take/cut aprox 3/8" off of each side of floor boards and It would make them flush with side berths or knotch them on two lower corners aprox 3/4" to fit over the fiberglass stiffners comming up from floor where gruves for verical bed stays prevent the stays from going to the floor, could relocate the vertcal slat stays also. I was also thinking the extra sticking up above the berths might raise the back cushions (in bed configuration) to the same height as berth seat cushions. I just didn't know if I was missing a board for the top support and if the offset (at the top) I am observing was normal. Have you seen any mods which would make the more funtional/comfortable..? Appreciate any pics/info you can provide. Thanks, AJ

We had a tough time finding the right side Porta-potty, too. Didn't want one raising the v-berth cushions so we held out until we found the right size. Found it a the Coleman store. I have no idea what model number it is.

Have you tried lying on the cushions to see how they match up with the sides? It very well may be possible they stick up on purpose. I'm notorious for forgetting to take pictures that I've promised to take. But I'll do my best.

I've seen no mods to other boats. Ours is the only H23 we've ever been on.

I can't recall whether mine extend up above the bed or not, and it is wrapped up. I've never actually set mine up, as we don't overnight, however from what I recall the seat backs should fit onto the floorboard supports with the metal hooks toward the center - the hooks should "nest" under the opposite side back cushion. Try it and see how they all line up.

I checked on my configuration yesterday. Don't cut your floorboards! Mine stick up higher than you would think but everything works out fine when you put the seat backs on them. Go with what you have.
