Seems like I had issues with the current setup last year.

Which way should the winches rotate if you are looking down on them facing forward while standing in the cockpit?

I don't think the cam cleats are in the right place or the right type. Was thhinking of going with jam cleats at an angle more to stern.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!!

You should be winding the free end of a line onto the winch in a clockwise direction when looking down (obviously). In other words, the winch should turn clockwise and stop when it tries to turn counter-clockwise (try yours). The cam cleat in your 1st photo looks reasonable from what can be seen, as the free end would come off the left side of the winch (left in the photo) and up to the cleat. Now, it may cause the line to angle too much toward the bow, which might make it less convenient to access. But from what I can see, doesn't look you have much room to move it aft - which I assume is to the left.

Not sure if that is a stock configuration or a PO mod.. my H23 has a standard cleat where your cam cleat is..

Cheers,
Brad

The previous owner put somee teak blocks under each winch to raise them up. I am going to try to tilt them more towards the cockpit, which would make it easier for the sheet to come off and go throught the cleat. Round one.

Thanks

I removed the stock cleats and installed cam cleats like you did. I soon found out I needed a riser on mine and installed a 1" Harkin Block under them. When sailing single handed as I do 50% or more of the time this works fine for me. Pictures of my setup in my profile. Good luck with yours, Charles

Hi Carbo, here's a picture of my set up (looking forward). (I wanted to keep the original cleats for mooring.) The cam cleats work great!

On the port side the cam cleat is forward of the original cleat, I think. The blocks are chunks of oak rounded to fit the combing, bedded with sealant, and held down with 3/16 inch SS bolts. Fender washers down below. Easy. Photos in my album.

PS I tilted my winches by planing/sanding the teak blocks just like you mentioned. It gives a better rope angle around the winches.

Still woring on this and hope to have it done by the weekend. I have done some testing by putting a level on the surface where the cleats and or cam cleats are so it gives me an angle running port to starboard.

Was thinking of making the top of the winnches match this same angle but it looks like it will raise the winches up to high. I am going to raise them up maybe a 1/2" or 1 full inch angle them as close to the cleat surface as possible.
