H23 Cleat Layout

Hey folks:

I have an 87 H23 that has been modified a bunch. I‘m looking to find out what the original cleat layout was for the boat. Mine has stern cleats, a midship cleat and two bow cleats. There’s another H23 at my club - that may be modified too - but that boat only has a single bow cleat in the middle of the deck, and instead of stern cleats, uses those metal rods at the stern as cleats. No midship cleats.

Sure, I can do what I like, but would like to know the original design and go from there.

Originally two at stern, none at midship and one in front. Later two up front depending on year of boat. Last model year was either 1991 or1992 Former dealer

Hunter 23 sailboat should have a bow and stern cleat per pages 15-16 of the owner's manual Microsoft Word - HUNTER 23 OWNERS MANUAL (sailboatowners.com), which says "One dock line should be attached to the bow cleat, another to the stem cleat that will lie against the dock". You can also do an internet search on "1987 Hunter 23 deck images" to see deck layout and cleat locations.

Our '91 H23 has a pair of plastic horn cleats at bow and the "embedded rod" style at the stern. A pair of horn cleats near the jib sheet winches, one on either side coaming. Nothing else except for the running rigging.

I introduced the first wing keel version and it had one cleat on the bow. As a dealer I was the top performing dealer for Hunter. I am basing my remarks on experience. Oh heck, Warren Luhrs had me involved with the boats 30 feet and down. There are many ideas I gave now standard to Warren. When there was an issue on the eastern seaboard, Eddie Breeden, mgr. warranty got me to handle and asked me to review several lawsuits filed. Hunter was part of my family

I recently purchased an "86 H23. The only horn cleats on the deck are the two by the jib sheet winches. There are the two embedded rods, one at each side near the stern, and one embedded rod in the point of the bow. The only other cleat on the boat is in the anchor locker. There are no mid-ship cleats. The embedded rods are a pain in the butt to use. I'm considering added a single cleat in the middle of the deck just aft of the anchor locker along with adding a pair of bow chocks.

You know, I never recognized that rod in the bow for what it was!
