have any of you varnished your teak to get the orange-ish color? any pros /cons between the varnish and teak cleaner,oil?

We recently sanded our companionway slats and tiller down to the bare wood and applied "Pettit Captains Varnish" (amber) purchased at West Marine. They look absolutely amazing! We applied about 6 coats with a sanding of 220 between each application. The wood is now very well sealed and protected. Make sure you use a mask and work in a well ventilated area.
I've always used teak oil, and have been happy with the results. To clean it, I use a pressure washer, which makes quick work of it. Just be sure to use a wide spray pattern, don't get too close to the wood, and keep the spray moving, or else you can remove a lot of wood. But, it really makes it easy to clean the "no skid" grooves that are cut into the coming box covers, which would be very difficult to sand.

yeah same here the boat came with teak cleaner and oil and I used it the first year but it didnt seem to get the color I see on others , I'm going to try the Pettit Captains Varnish" (amber) now what grit should I take to the existing wood prior to 2nd.3rd coats ?
There was a thick layer of old varnish that had to be removed on our wood. We used 100 grit with the circular sander to start, then 150 as we got closer to the wood, then 220 to get the last bit of old varnish off. I'd use 220 if you don't have any old varnish to remove. I'll post some pics later.

I have used teak oil and varnish. I will be going back to teak oil the next time it needs to be done.
I use Sikkens Cetol, Marine Natural Teak. Sand the wood to bare, put two coats on (lightly sand between with 220 grit). It will take your breath away and is durable. I lightly sand each year and put a coat on to keep the finish bright.
