H23.5 Stanchion Backing Plate?

I was rebedding the stanchions on my 23.5 and one screw on the bow pulpit is no longer biting into anything when reassembled. it's the top screw on the starboard side. There are two screws that hold the end of the stanchion in a captive channel. There is no access to the rear, but I could cut away some in the anchor locker to see what's there, but I don't like "exploratory surgery". I was hoping someone has run into this and just retapped the backing plate or some other method. If anyone knows what ( if?) the backing material is, that would be a big help in determining my next move.

There is an embedded aluminum plate there. You might be able to tap the old hole up to the next larger size bolt. BrianW

Thanks Brian. I'm planning on selling it and am rebedding all of the deck hardware to spiff it up a bit and eliminate any small leaks. This one screw was the only one that gave me problems. A couple of others were hard to break free, but worked out ok.

Quick Fix

A small piece of wire in the hole often is all that is needed to get the screw to bite. If you can get a scrap piece of braided SS wire and unravel it just a couple inches would suffice. The self help counter at West Marine usually has some ends that someone cut off unless you get there the day they happened to clean it up.

When encountered with that as the top dealer selling the 23.5 and involvement with that boat as well, I would follow Brian W going with the next size up bolt.

Thanks for suggestions. I was picturing a steel plate with a nut welded on one side, a thick threaded plate, or maybe just a nut epoxied in place. I appreciate the clarification. Thanks.
