am new to sailing and still clueless about everything but question is I am getting an order in on a roller furling kit from this site with ball bearings once this is purchased does it install directly to the jib I have ? or will I need something else? Ive seen some of yours and when rolled up they have either a teal color or darker color , not sure what else if anything is required , thanks for any input

You have a couple of options, you can (if your jib is in fairly good shape), have your jib cut to fit the new roller furling or you can order a new sail. However, you might look into the cost of having your sail cut verses a new one. When I put my roller furling on I discovered that for a couple of hundred dollars more I could have just bought a new sail, instead of having my sail cut.

That 'color' is UV protection. It is needed. It is a scarificial strip used by sailmaikers to protect your sail from UV damage. If you keep you sail on the RF, you must have the UV protection.

I agree with "Mtwo", Get a new sail made. By the time you have your new sail cut and the sacrifical strip installed, there won't be that much of a difference in cost. Besides, you can sell your old one, save it for a future boat, and use it for a spare. If your RF jib is damaged, you can remove the RF and use your old sail.

Regarding your sacrificial strip color; If you are considering removing the 90s swoosh stripe and adding something different, have your sac strip done in that color. It's gonna cost me $200 to get my stripe changed from teal to blue.

something to consider:

One of the reasons I chose the exact boat I bought was the Roller Furling that was already on it. I thought it would be nice to have. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed with it. I keep my boat on the trailer with the mast down and the jib when not in the water. The RF makes raising the mast more dangerous and difficult to raise due to the added weight. This is my 5th boat and 1st with a RF. When sailing, the RF is nice but the difficulty at the ramp makes it not worth it to me. I plan to buy a new forestay and jib for daysailing and use the RF for multi day trips.

If you keep your boat with the mast up and don't have to raise it each time, the RF is great but If you have to raise the mast each time, I'd forget about a RF ...just one guys opinion.

Welcome to sailing, there's nothing like it. The H23.5 is a great boat.

Order a New Sail, or maybe not

I was all set to get a roller furler for my boat when I bought it. In the interim I rigged up a downhaul for the jib and then bouth a yankee bag from the chandlery on this site. The jib is so small it is easy to handle and because of it's size your not going to reef it. Wait a while and see if you really need one

thanks for the input , we do plan on keeping the boat in a slip across the street here and wasnt sure as I dont know howto sail and figured the roller system might make learning a bit easier. will probably wait now and see how things go with what I have. thanks again
