I have the kick-up rudder on my H22. The last sail last season I hit something that caused the rudder to kick-up. In the process the line pulled the padeye off of the rudder and broke the through-deck block. I have since decreased the line size to 6mm. Do you guys do anything different to create a 'weakest link' for the kick-up feature?

So is your rudder not the stock H22 rudder? I don't think that mine is a kick up rudder, though I am thinking of how my Hobie's rudders kick up, and I haven't run mine aground hard enough to see it kick up though either.
I believe it is stock. I'm the second owner. The top half of the rudder is aluminum and the bottom part is fiberglas. The bottom pivots on a bolt and actually floats up if you don't tighten the line up into the cam cleat. Is yours not made that way?
Nope that sounds about how mine is set up. Sitting here at home I can't think of how to incorporate a break away point. You would need to know the force needed to pull the rudder into place, as well as the force put on it while moving through the water, and then build something just stronger than that, so when you hit ground, it will break.
As good of an idea as it sounds, I dont know that i would try to manufacture one my self, you might want to look at the store here the IDA Model specific rudders have a kick up feature. I know they are pricey, but it is designed not to break.

Are you looking to release rudder downhaul line under pressure? Harken makes a quick release clam cleat.I have one one my hunter23.5.Releases downhaul line on impact.
A quick release cam cleat that releases under extra pressure would be ideal. Would you happen to have a part number? The thru-deck block in the rudder was broken when I got the boat two seasons ago, and now I experienced the same breakage last season when the rudder hit something solid enough to pull the padeye out and break the thru-deck block again.
