H216 Rudder Drum / Bearings

Please give some feedback on experience you may have inspecting, servicing, or repairing your rudder steering assemblies on the H216. In reviewing the archives I see where several have replaced bearings and did rudder drum work on your H216's. While doing my pre-season inspections the rudder drum appeared to be binding. While attempting adjustments and lubrication I heard several bearings drop into the drum, and see where the bearings appear to be molded plastic. I'd appreciate hearing your experiences in doing repairs yourself or working with Hunter Marine in getting parts and assistance. Thanks in advance. Kris

Bearings

Kris!Our 216 is one of the first ones. Rudder bound up. Pulled the whole drum out and being not too far from Hunter, took it down. Original bearings were nylon and swelled from water absorbtion. They put in new material bearings. No more problems. Good luck!

My experience

Kris, I have an early boat and did not keep it in the water but had a binding problem which ended up not being related to the nylon bearings. I took the rudder cartridge out of the boat and disassembled it. Upon examination I found bits of metal shavings in several of the bearings. Cleaning those out solved the issue. I also found that the ring which was bonded to the cylinder had come partially undone. It was clearly a quality issue of not being careful to clean and get a consistent bead of the adhesive in place. Hunter sent some of the adhesive and I repaired it myself. I feel that this boat had some degree of poor engineering and quality control but I now can say unequivically that Lind is an outstanding person to work with and they have made significant progress in the design.
