Hunter 216 Lake Hartwell GA
Our local sailing club has decided that our H-216 is "just too fast to be racing against their boats"-no matter what handicap we are willing to take. The H-216 is racing with a PHRF of 195 in some fleets on other lakes but they won't even allow us to race here with even a 250 handicap or even a greater one. Lesson learned - Don't win the first four races you enter with a new boat! Most of the above boats have spinnakers but ours hasn't arrived yet. What a fun little boat!

A question for you

Is it really the "local sailing club" that is so wrong-headed, or just a few disgruntled egos in the hierarchy. The whole idea of PHRF is to allow dissimilar (i.e. one boat is faster, or slower, that the other) boats to race agasint each other. The real penalty for a "too fast" boat is that you lose the experience of tactial racing. Why don't you put the issue before the entire group, for example at the skipper's meeting: would they consider it fair to be excluded from a PHRF race just because their boat was faster than someone else's boat? If necessary, consider a complaint against the racing committee filed with the regional organization. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo
