I noticed the Hunter web site lists the MSRP of the H170 at 6949 with trailer. I've seen this a 2002 model of this boat at a local dealer for about $1000 more. I expected the street price to be lower than MSRP. Is this typical for this industry or is it the area where I live?

Let me answer this one guys. Yes, Hunter suggests a price on the boat going out the door only. Then you have freight, commissioning and extras and so forth. That is why I wish manufacturers would put the price and then in bold words tell you what I just told you. As for the small boats, it is very hard to make a living on them unless you sell alot as the profit margins are not all that much as some would tend to think. Do not forget our overhead to include the insurances which is high, wage, SSI that we have to contribute, electricity, water, land payment whether we are buying or renting, advertising, and so forth. Do not forget all the hours we work and do not make a salary as most of my customers make. I hope that puts this to rest. crazy dAve Condon

I'm just trying to find out what a fair price is. Where I live there is only one sailboat dealer so this is the only way I know of finding out if my dealer is gauging me or not. I'm willing to drive a couple of hours for a better deal if he is.

There are not many margins on daysailors and whether you believe me or not, that is your choice. I know what I have to pay for the boats and the costs and hours involved. I could make more money flipping hamburgers witht less hassell but the joy of those sailing is my reward. PS I am a legend for my knowledge, sailing, repairs, but most of all for being crazy and if you really want to own a buisness, get into the sailboat market and then you will find out what hard work really is. Crazy Dave Thanks for your cander. I agree that a good dealer is worth paying a few extra dollars for. But I got burned when I stated whitewater kayaking. Where I live there are few sailors and fewer kayakers. I trusted my local dealer only to discover not only were threir prices about double what of those dealers near rivers, but they had no idea what they were talking about. I wound up buying bad equipment and paid way too much for it. Right now, I don't know if I've found a good dealer or not. That's why I posted this thread. I didn't mean to offend any dealers out there. But the Internet has made it possible for people to be wiser consumers and that's all I'm trying to do. I've owned a few of my own businesses and trust me they are all hard rows to hoe. Rod

I've been cruising around the Net looking at H170 prices and the dealers all seem to be within a couple hundred dollars of one another. Let's face it, the H170 is apparently an extremely popular boat. The used prices and the relative dearth of used boats available seems to be testimony to its popularity. What gets me is the few 1999s on the market, even though they are now four model years old, are still fetching within a couple hundred bucks of a new one. I have even seen a few used boats for more than retail on a new one. I only wish Santa Claus could fit one down my chimney.

Good response. I assume you already have priced the boat. Were there any extras on it? I haven't hoed a row since I don't know when but if you have any Sailing Associations or Clubs in your area ask about the one sailboat dealer. I guarantee you will find out what type of service and experience they can offer. We have one dealer in our area, been there.
