H15/H146 Trailer Servicing

It's been 3 years now since my H15 arrived on its Continental trailer. During those years it has only made about 30, 3 mile return trips from my home to the launching ramp I use on the Swan River (salty for a river) in Western Australia.

I have been using a lanolin based water repellant/lubricant (Inox MX4) regularly on the leaf springs and wheels.

Can someone please advise what items on a boat trailer of this size/type should be serviced and how often.

Thanks for any input!

I suggest that you inspect your bearings and tires about once a year. The newness of your trailer is wearing off, so it's time. The wear factor on trailor wheels is not mileage, but sun damage and dunkings. Just because the tread is good doesn't mean the tire is good. If you do not feel comfortable with wheel work, a decent mechanic can inspect everything and re-pack for under $50 (compare to the cost of seeing your precious baby in a ditch!). I've seen on this site endorsement for 'bearing buddies' which allow you to pump more grease into the bearing to keep them waterproof. Personnally, I do not think this should delay periodic inspections over 1 year. Suggest that you rinse liberally with fresh water following each salt-water dunking. That includes all the places that the boat drips on up front, and the winch. No salt crusties when it dries. Otherwise, a well-made trailer should stand up to the minimal use for years.

Thanks for the advice. It's definitely time for an inspection and service.

Also, within 30 minutes of leaving the launching area I wash down the boat and trailer with a Karcher high pressure washer (foam with suds first to break down any salt crusties and then rinse off with fresh water under high pressure).

Cheers!

If you want any information, c ontact me with your name, phone and location. I introduced many of the small boats for Hunter but now retired. I will be glad to call and advise. I know trailers and the boats by the back of my hand. If you want to verify who I am, just look in the archives and better yet, ask
