I was rooting around in the stuff I got with my purchase and I found a giant genoa in a sail bag marked staysail. It is easily a 155, maybe more. Near 24 feet on the LP. Anybody ever sail a 37 cutter with such a genoa??

As you obviously know Bill that boat was raced as a sloop. I remember an old post where he explained his rationale for converting it. That was probably his favorite light wind foresail. There are one or two other H37C owners who have either removed the mid-stay or made it so they could move it. Maybe one of them will have some comments. Balance must be a problem when you consider how much farther back our masts are than on a sloop. Sure be fun to try if that mid-stay is still out of the slot.

I'm sure I'll try it,. I'm not sure the Admiral can trim it. I have no idea what was original equipment, but I have Lewmar 42's to trim acres of cloth in the 155. I made the admiral some 15" winch handles, but the 30" circle is too much for her. I still intend to rig the boat as a cutter, I believe I have all the pieces, but I was looking for input from somebody who sailed the boat with a huge genoa.

I was given a genoa that is pretty beat up but still usable as shown in the picturs.
The clew comes to within about 2 feet of the jib winches. One winters day when there was light wind in San Francisco Bay we raised it and were amazed at how well we could sail, with and without the main. Balance seems to be no problem at all and although the currents make it hard to judge we seemed to be able to make 5+ knots upwind in about 4 knots of true wind.
Tacking is another issue. I figured I would have to help it around the staysail stay but that big old light soft genoa would'nt even go around the mast or lowers without me going forward to help it.
We really liked the way it performed and based on that have invested a few bucks and some labor on repairs so we have it for those days when you just could'nt otherwise sail.
BTW - I have been questioned as to whether the winches can hanle it and the answer is yes - it is the forces it generates, not the size of the sail that is the issue.

Thanks Johnb just the type input I was looking for. Down here at the opposite corner of the country, the seasons are reversed. Summer is light air season (between hurricanes that is).

Looking forward to trying the 150, although the admiral found an old post from the PO complaining about how hard it was to tack. Local friend rigged a line to his clew thru his cruising chute block on the anchor roller. Casts off the loaded sheetwhen the sail begins to luff, pulls the clew forward during the tack, lets go of the line past head to wind and trims the new loaded sheet. Lots of new toys to play with.

You know that idea of a line to pull the clew forward had never occurred to me - got to love this forum!

Anything bigger than a 135 backwinds the main when going uphill. A h37c sailed as a sloop with a large headsail is a magnificent boat.

Blaise is right on when it comes to making a 37c really perform. He has won to many races to count with Midnight Sun. I have looked at the back of her more times than i would like to count. One of the reasons i bought mine.

i totally agree with his view on the max 135 Jib, sailing it fast as a sloop and with the flaps. Those rudder flaps really help to reduce turbulance on the rudder and make a big difference in speed and handling. I laminated up some fiberglass pannels really thin and vacume bagged them to a flat table. cut out a flap and fit and fared it in. really worked well. they were very thin and flexable.

As far as pulling the sail forward you can do it with a block behing the head stay and just pull it enough for the clew to get ahead of the staysail and tack as normal, just let the line go and she will tack ok. This is not fast but it wll make it easier, also if the jib sheet is connected without shackle, tided or spliced to the sail then it wont hand up as easy as with a knot or a fitting.

3rd jib isn't even on my bucket list. Almost new 100 from JSI on the boat, 155 in a bag will do me as long as I can forsee.

Lots of other places I want to spend my kids inheritance. Gonna pull the mast for chain plate repair and other stuff this summer. Will rig up as a cutter. If I don't like it, I can always go back to the sloop rig.
