I recently bought a H356 and the windlass worked fine on the sea trial.I went to use it for the first time the other day and it clicked one time when I pushed the up or down button on the fore deck. Its getting power obviously.I have the breaker on the panel in addition to the fuse breaker below the chart desk.
Any suggestions what to do next.
thanks
Richard

Quite often these have their own battery in the bow. Is yours low?

Are you sure you've correctly reset the chart desk breaker?

If I get just a relay click it from the windlass buttons it is that breaker that is the cause.

Re: Are you sure you've correctly reset the chart desk break

check the high amp breaker for the windlass-if the relay clicks you have control power but the main power for the motor is missing. check the power at the breaker. next, check the power at the relay, remove the teak panel over the forward end of the vee berths, the relay is a small box mounted under the deck. the bottom of the motor is there, too, so make sure you get power to the motor when the relay is engaged.
the 356 does not have a dedicated battery for the windlass

There is a dedicated battery for the windlass in the H356. It resides in the bow section and can be reached by removing the v-berth mattress and opening the access panel.

Wow! Doug, where is it in your bow? none of the 356s I've seen have one. Under my vee berth I've got the water tank, a very small compartment forward of that, and the storage area on the aft end of the berth.

As you stand, centered, facing forward in the forward cabin, the access panel is reached by extending your left arm forward and slightly to the left.

No dedicated battery

Doug/Karen: What is your hull number? My hull #157 does NOT have a dedicated battery forward. I know because I removed the forward bulkhead and accessed the windlass area for fixing a small leak. There is no access port at all. I don't doubt you, but perhaps there was a change that eliminated that battery after your hull was built?

Richard: The clicking of the relay but no power to the windlass happens to my boat when the main breaker under the nav table is tripped, usually when I try to pull the anchor up against wind or tide. Cycle breaker properly and the windlass comes to life.

Could be- Escape is hull #198 and she doesn't have the battery either.

Our boat is hull #303 and the windlass runs off the house batteries.

I wonder if the windlass was dealer installed and they decided to place a battery under the forward berth to power it ?

I guess the main breaker for the windlass would then move to the forward cabin ?

Battery

No US built 356 or 36 have a battery in the bow but maybe because your boat was a UK boat they did change some things.

H 356 windlass breaker

Hey Ivan
You re 100% correct regarding my breaker being tripped. After closer investigation, that was my issue.
As a recent owner of this vessel,I am discovering more and more features about this great sailing Hunter 356.I said it before, but now I know its true after sailing this boat 4 or 5 times,Hunter really did there homework in designing the 356.We bought a new H34 years ago,so I know the difference.
