Does any H 34 (shoal draft) owners know exactly how much paint it takes per coat? Also I plan to put a barrier coat on the keel only (then paint with antifoulant) How much barrier coat will I need for 2 coats on the keel? Thanks, Charles & Lynn "Artistry"

Depend on Paint type and Application method

The type of paint used and the application method effects the answer. I've see the yard guys thin down VC17 with acetone and spray at 34' boat with less than 2 quarts. Brushing on the blue stuff might take a gallon. Rolling on something else make be somewhere in between. I've done 2 coats on the h34 deep keel with a quart using a roller. Have done the keel with Interlux VC Tar and later with Petit Rustlok, it rusts anyway even in fresh water. Next time maybe I sand blast it a coat it with West epoxy. Glad I can't see it when it's in the water. Barry s/v (PER DIEM too)

Bottom job

Your "barrier" coat money will be better spent painting the wetted surface of the hull and using epoxy on the keel (as previous post suggested). The whole purpose of the barrier coat is to keep the fiberglass hull protected. The metal keel is not going to be damaged to any great degree if the gel-coat gets a few blisters. Some Hunter keels have been stripped of gel-coat and then coated with epoxy before bottom paint is applied.I'd barrier coat the hull, sand and epoxy the keel and then roll/brush bottom paint over all.
