I have been looking to buy a sail boat this winter and I have come accross some boats that have the mast stepped on the keel rather than the deck. I like the layout, price, size, casize ratio and the looks of the Hunter 33. Can someone tell me where the mast is stepped on this boat, and what are the advantages of that. Thanks. Tom

33 Mast

The mast on all 33's and most hunters in general is deck stepped. Stepping-unstepping the mast is easier, as is initial tuning. The mast section on a deck stepped must be heavier. I prefer deck stepped because the way I do it it's one less thing to leak, and with my mast coming up and down each year it's simply easier.

Sam, are your sure????

I just saw an add for an H-33 on Yacht World web site, says mast is stepped on keel. Could you have been mistaken, and there are keep stepped H-33s out there?? Any one else know??

Deck stepped

Unless I'm mistaken in my understanding of the term, the 33's mast is definitley deck stepped. There is a compression post that transfers the load from the deck to the keel. As I understand it, though, this compression post to keel connection does not make the mast "keel stepped" as it is still physically stepped on the deck. Perhaps the compression post sitting in the middle of the cabin is why the seller in the ad claimed it was keel stepped? Tom FitzGibbon s/v Plan B

deck stepped

He's right, the mast is stepped on the deck but there is a compression post that sits on the keel and goes up the point in the salon where the mast sits directly on top, on the deck. I've heard of some of these H33's where the compression post is in bad shape so watch for that. I own 1981 H33 and love the boat, she's a jewel to us. Though my friends call her a "party boat" she will move out of her way now that I have some decient rags flying.

mast

The only Hunters that I know of that have keel-stepped masts are the Vision 32 and 36. I have several friends that have keel-stepped masts and they are a pain to step and always leak.

Of course I'm sure...

My mast comes down and up each season, one of the reasons I went with the Hunter 33. I've heard of NO 33's having problems with the compression post. It's the 34, the successor to the 33 that has all the problems with the compression post. It is wood in a complicated build-up with a poorly designed hole above foe wiring that provides a perfect path for invasion of water, a giant step backwards compared to the simple, effective metal post on the 33. It appears that every one of the 34's built in the first three years of production ended up with the problem. The only thing you'll see even close to that on the 33 is that the deck on a very small number has compressed slightly under the mast pulpit. No big deal and barely worth the effort of repairing. The mistake here is on the part of the broker or whomever listed the boat. I've seen this sort of inaccuracy more times than I could begin to count, including in reference books. When you're looking for a boat make sure you know more than the broker, which realy isn't all that tough to do. If it's a Hunter, ask here. We all know everything and will be more than happy to demonstrate it. ASK AN OWNER!!!
