H-30 Cockpit drain screens.

I have the standard strainer covers over both cockpit drains. They have slots about 1/8" wide across the middle. All it takes is a leaf or a little cottonwood to completely block these, and the cockpit will flood. Every week when I go to the boat, they are completely blocked.

Has anyone cut larger openings in them or replaced them with something else ??

I removed the covers on mine many years ago .. was much easier to wash down any uuhhh seasickness residue.. Never put 'em back on for fear of a leaf flooding the cockpit..

I have a story about those drains. When I first took posession of my H30, we had a week of torrential rains here in San Diego. After the rains stopped I came back to the boat and found to my horror that the floorboards were awash in 6" of water and there was condensation everywhere. It was literally raining from the coachtop. Apparently what had happened was that the cockpit drains plugged, then rain water backed up and went down the engine access panel and then into the bilge. This would have been OK, except that the bilge pump picked this particular time to quit. The result was a flooded boat.

All turned out OK. Pumped the bilge dry, got a dehumidifier in the boat and was able to dry it out before mildew set in. But another day or two and it would have been a smelly mess. So looking for drain solutions is a good idea!

Yes, on my 1980 H30, there's a roughly 3' by 3' panel in the cockpit directly above the engine. Fixing the seal is on my to do list?

Is that panel factory installed or a mod?. My 79 does not have a cockpit engine access panel. Sure wish it did though.

Its factory. Must be one of the changes they made along the way.

'82 H30. No panel. Just fine without it. Sounds like they are prone to leaking.
