I noticed mid-season that my new-to-me 290 didn't have a topping lift (I know - duh!). I was told that because I have the solid vang with in-mast furling that I really don't need one. The solid vang does support the boom, but do I need the topping lift? Should I add one while the mast is off for the winter?

Topping lift

You don't need one and if you didn't have in mast furling it would be inconvenient with with a big roach in the main. Now that you have the in mast furler and no roach in the main it can't hurt.

No need

The topping lift is just to keep the boom off your head, and out of the cockpit - and your solid vang does that. David Lady Lillie

Spare halyard

You could use the topping lift as a spare hayard. I have use mine for a safety line to the harness when going up the mast.

Not required but..

very, very useful. If you add one, you will find uses for it. Phillip
