Without opening up a discussion on the engine (SB8-Yanmar) being undersized, has anyone had any marked improvement in performance changing the prop. My 75 has its original 2 blade,.....am considering a 3 blade for more thrust and power under motor often have to motor into 10-15'seas and 20 knots of wind more thrust would be helpful.....I am looking for size and pitch recommendations...........Cheers.

Prop Manufacturers

Contact any of the prop manufacturers and they can give you the proper size and pitch for your boat, engine and transmission. I have been very happy with the Campbell sailer prop - see the link

cambell sail prop

We have a cambell sail prop on our Hunter 29.5 I think that it would be an excellent choice. In adition to working well it backs up like a dream with only a small amount of prop walk.

Hunter 1980 - 33 Bradenton
Just changed from two, to a three blade prop

My old 1980 Hunter 33 has a just as old 2QM15 engine in it rated at 14 hp. With the old 2 blade prop (before hull painting) the engine would only rev. to 1900. Per the specs the prop was a 14-12. It was a large 2 blade with a square shape. From the best prop shop in the area I picked up a used three blade 13-11. Now with this prop (and newly painted hull) the engine revs. to 2400 and the boat moves at 6.4+ knots and even better 5.2 knots at 1800 rpm. The engine's no load rev. is 2800. It also smoothed out the vibration the drive train had before with 2 cylinders driving a 2 blade prop. I wish I had changed to a three blade prop years ago.

3 blade prop

Peter: I purchased my 1980 Hunter 27 July 2006. It came with a (replace) 2GM Yanmar engine and it has a 3 blade prop. I found the old 2 blade prop under the Main salon bunk. My engine revs to 3400 RPMs with a top speed of 5.5 knots. Top speed can frequently be achieved at around 2500 RPMs. Mike

Campbell Sailor prop 3-blade

I changed from stock 2-blade to Campbell Sailor prop 3-blade. Mark improvement in thrust but have two distinct problem. 1)Reduced prop kick - now I've to re-learn berthing technique 'cos I can no longer rely on prop kicker. 2)as the Campbell blade is narrow (small surface area) barnacle growth on it has more pronouce impact than the stock larger bladed 2-blade prop. Another benefit with 3-blade is it is quiet running and very quiet when free spinning (under sail).
