I'M FAIRLY NEW TO THE SAIBOAT SCENE. I PURCHASED A NEW 2002 H-260. I HAVE MY BOAT DOCK IN LAKE PUEBLO, COLORADO. NOW THAT WINTER IS OPON US, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT OTHER WATER BALAST OWNERS DO. I REALLIZE THAT IF THE WATER BALAST WAS TO FREEZE IT WOULD RUIN THE BOAT. THE WATER TEMP RIGHT NOW IS 54 DEGREES. WHAT IF ANYTHING CAN I DO TO PROTECT THE WATER BALAST FROM FREEZING? OTHER THAN PUTTING THE BOAT ON THE HARD! THANKS FOR YOUR IMPUT!

A solution...

Do a search on the archives for the following phrase (in the title): Water Ballast Freezing There's a solution offered there (anti-freeze in the ballast tank) and a little discussion on the topic. A general search on "Water Ballast Freeze" in the archives will produce a ton of results also. Dave Crowley s/v Wind Dreamer

As long as the water is above 0deg C shouldn't be

a problem, I would be more concerned with the fresh water tank and the two water lines that feed the sinks, and the drains from the sinks. Baums Rush H260

Hello Red

If your yacht is in a pen why don't you consider lowering the mast and pumping out the ballast tank. Pump out the fresh water tank while your at it.

Checked the weather channel

I looked at average temps for Pueblo Colorado on the weather channel web site. It looks like it gets pretty cold there at night. If it was my money on the line, that boat would be on the trailer and tucked away by now. The ave low temp for November is 23 F.

Thanks All

I did check the archives and appreciate all of your imputs. I love to sail my boat, and I have to pay for my monthly slip fee reguardless if the boat is in the water or on the hard! On the hard I have to pay an additional storage fee. Last year in January the water temp was 37 degrees. I can always pull the boat out as a last resort. I've decided that I can always pump out the water. Which brings me to another question...can I leave the mast up without any water in the ballast? I know I can't sail without ballast, but can the boat be tied to the dock and still be stable without any ballast? I have a pump that would allow me to pump out the ballast in a few minutes and I can always fill it back up when I want to sail. What do you all think?

IMHO

I don't think theres any danger to leaving the boat at dock, with the ballast tank empty. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

Agree with Ron, Except

What happens when you get a couple feet of snow? How much more weight is on the deck and how stable would it be? Another thing to remember is the valve is not water proof just because it is totally empty one day does not mean it will be in a few days. You are skirting the edges here but if you are prudent and cautious you should be OK.

Water bed...

Do you have shore power? You might be able to drop a water bed heater in there and keep her warm?
