I have been thinking about replacing my tiller with a steering wheel. Has anyone done that and (if so) how was the experience. Would you do it again?

Wheel

I converted from a tiller to Edson wheel on a Tartan 30 and it was relatively straight forward. I planned in advance using the installation information provided by Edson. They have conversion procedures and items for most production boats. After receiving the installation information I was able to obtain many used parts.

You may be better off selling your H25 and buying one with a wheel. I looked at upgrading an H27 with a wheel about 3 years ago and found it cost prohibitive. You might be able to find a cost effective wheel on the used market. I did not look at used equipment when I investigated upgrading my H27. Good luck

Nautical Trader on bridge st

The nautical Trader on Bridge st has a pedastal that will work for you (I believe) and it comes with a 24" wheel and the nut and chain. $495.00 Better hurry. Has a compass on it as well. I just put a wheel on my H22.

Wheel

I sail an h25 with a tiller I keep between my knees when I single-hand. Shorter tiller when I have a crew. Change takes five minutes max. Why bother with a wheel?

Is there a reason other than bigger boats have it?

In my opinion a wheel requires much more cockpit space than a tiller on small boats. I also like the feel and input a tiller gives to the helmsman. A tiller has very few basic parts, a wheel many more. Maybe a larger boat is a better option? Ray S/V Speedy

why a wheel? tiller nearly blinded my sister

Somehow when she was trying to get to the stern her forehead (right above her eye) came smartly in contact with the end of the tiller. It fetched a really nice lump. The tiller also extends too far into the cockpit and is always hitting people. Someone suggested a short tiller for sailing with a crowd and if I can't get to that wheel on Bridge street on time I may opt for that.

OH MAN

I was pissed when I saw it. It was the one I wanted. I ended up with a unit off of a 60 footer. The unit at NT's is quite tall which you will appreciate. My pedestal is about 5 inches shorter. I like the fact that I can let go the wheel and unlike the tiller she doesn't try to round up right away on me. (yes I had a tiller tamer) My wife has RA and couldn't steer with the tiller. With the wheel it's a lot less pressure on the wrists.

Thomas, I owe you an apology. I sent my post

thinking that this was an attempt to make a smaller boat just like the bigger ones with wheels. I feel like an ass as your reason was very, very valid. Actually, I am an ass. I will never be this judgemental again, and that's a promise I'll keep forever. Thanks for the lesson. I hope the wheel works out. Ray S/V Speedy

The wheel thing...

I've had the wheel now for 6 trips, with winds ranging from 0 to 30 knots. Tiller is a bit easier to use in very high winds, which is fine as my steering config allows for a quick change back and forth to either. (mind you, into the wind and sails luffing) The wheel rules. Period. I like being able to let go the wheel and grab a sandwich or go forward for a few without the boat trying to immediately round up. Also the tiller isn't there to chase people around. The cup holders on top of the pedastal are welcome by all as well. It's probably not as good as the tiller for racing, but I don't race her, so it's not an issue. A bigger boat won't make much difference. The cockpit on my H22 is as big or bigger than some boats 26 to 30 feet that I've seen.

Going to post any pictures???

I'd love to see what a 22 looks like with a wheel. I agree, I'd love to put one on mine. I let go of the tiller, put on my tamer, and swoosh, right up into the wind! dlg
