H 23 Steaming Light

Has anyone had the same bad luck I have with the Pergo (oval) steaming light that came with the Kenyon mast on the 23? It is positioned approx. 2/3 of the way up the mast and is the same as the stern light with a curved adapter to fit the roll of the stick. I couldn't seem to keep a bulb intact for more than a month without a burnout. The stern version is fine! Soooo, I replaced the entire fixture with a new one with the same results. I don't particularly like the design anyway (those who have attempted to replace a bulb know what I mean), and have given up trying to keep a bulb in it. My question is has anyone replaced it with a different type, and what problems have you encountered with the fit? I have seen various ones in the West Marine catalogue, but they all appear to have flat backs (no good on a curved mast). Model numbers please if possible!Thanks in advance, folks

Steaming light bulbs

Dan:I replaced my steaming light last year with an entirely new but identical Pergo fitting. Of course, if I knew before hand how to disassemble the fitting properly, I would have only replaced the light bulb which was burned out! On the other hand, I couldn't find the proper light bulb in stock. Check the model number required for your bulb. You might be putting the wrong model of bulb in and burning it out. Must say that I haven't had a problem since. Cheers! Kevin.

When I purchased my boat last year none of the navigation lights worked, but I was able to fix them all except for the bow light which I replaced. As for fixing the steaming light, I took the whole light assembly apart and off the mast and cleaned all the metal parts with electrical contact cleaner including the ends of the wires coming out of the mast. I replaced the bulb with an identical bulb that I purchased from Auto Zone. I don't know the part number, but if you take your old bulb with you and you can match it up. It was cheaper than the same bulb at West Marine and hasen't burned out since I installed it over six months ago.

I have an Aqua Signal steaming light

I bought it in West Marine. It has a flat back, but there is a metal mounting bracket (sold separately) that screws to the mast. It's not as sleek as the Perko, but it's a lot easier to service and it's the same make as my bicolor bow light.I had the older masthead fitting with two bulbs but they were both wired together to make an anchor light and I took them off. Now my anchor light circuit powers the steaming light (which I mounted at the spreaders) and I have a Davis megalight which I can raise to the masthead on the main halyard if and when I ever anchor out at night.PeterH23 "Raven"
