Finally got my new (to me) boat in the water this weekend. I noticed all the usual gripes about the clam cleats and the jib cleats and am planning on rope clutchs and spinlock cam cleats in the near future. But I did notice some vibrations that seemed to be coming from the forestay (roller furling jib) when the wind piped up to between 15-20 knots. it felt like hitting rumble strips in the highway but lower frequency. It looked like the jib luff was "pumping". Do I need to tension my side stays? This boat has no back stay as I'm sure you are aware. The side stays did not seem loose though. Any suggestions from the group?

Think thats normal mine does it as well under certain conditions , had my stays tight also. I'll get that noise when I'm heeling a bit

Trim your jib in a little tighter and enjoy the ride. "pumping" is a byproduct of pinching

Mast pumping is real bad thing for the rig. Check the tension in your shrouds. I'll bet they are way too loose. After you get your mast rake set check the tension with a Loos gauge. It should be 20% SWL.

Sounds like I need to buy a book on rig tuning, I'm sure if I learn enough I can help tune some rigs for friends too. Anuone have a recomendation on a good book to buy?

Fortunately you have a conventional rigged (not B&R) fractional rig with single swept spreaders. Tuning is pretty easy and straight forward. Set your mast rake, put the mast in column, tension the cap shrouds equally with a Loos gauge then set the lowers (also equally). Re-check the cap shroud tension and go for a test sail. At 15 to 20knots the leeward shrouds need to stay taut. If they slaken the rig needs to be tighter.

Thanks Alan, I'll double check the tension and rake. I don't remember the leeward shrouds being loose but I'll check again. No, it's not B&R rigged, but it doesn't have a backstay, just swept back shrouds so no easy on the fly tightening of the forestay.

After setting the mast rake with the turnbuckle at the base of the forestay you never need to touch it again. If you do you will be changing the mast rake setting. All the tensioning in the rig is done with the shrouds (never the forestay). Mast rake can never be changed on the 'fly'. It is always done on flat water with no breeze that will affect the reading.

This is true if the boat lives in a marina. For those of us that keep our boats on their trailers, we are constantly loosening, unshackeling, reshackeling, and retightening the for stay. Once I have the rake set, the shrouds are pinned and never adjusted again, and the rig tension is adjusted with the forstay.

Or you can rig a closure on the forestay and basically set the rig tuning once a season no matter how often you step the rig. Search the CS Johnson catalog for "lever". I think I rigged the 14-210 on our H260 and our former H240.
