I was working on my Hunter 23 as I was putting it to bed for the winter. I live in MD along the Chesapeake and Potomac and it gets to cold. When I was getting aboard I noticed a piece of my rub strip was looking strange. Apparently at some point in the boats life someone had damaged it, it is about foot to foot in half long. It is off the part that is attached to the boat. Is it possible to cut the bad section off and replace it? If so, cut it out I assume is not that big a deal replacing it may be different story. How is it attached?

I suspect that the rub rail is a two part. the first part you can pull out and then note the screws attachment to the hull or nut and bolt. Yes you can cut it without issue. Not sure if the base is damaged but you will not find it. I still have some of that too.

As for the rub rail, it will be difficult to find any insert to match. Ok. take a photo of your rub rail and send the photo to davecondon@mindspring.com. I may still have some and can send it to you if you will cover the cost of shipping only.

You do not know me but I sold the most of these boats and you can see my name in the archives.

THe fiberglass behind the rail is split so that the rub rail will not hold..The current rail is one piece starts on the stern and goes around and comes back to the stern. The broken part looks like it snapped where the track holds the rail. The part that attaches the rub rail to the boat is the piece I was thinking of cutting out. That is the piece I need if it is possible to do this. That is the part the needs to be replaced the rail itself is fine . It looks at some point like someone had the boat tied wrong or slammed into the side of a dock. Sorry I did not get back to you but my mother-in-law lives with us and we had some issues. She is 91 with all kinds of major problems. I have not even had time to cover the boat before it gets full of leaves. I also need to take the sail down on the furler and that is a hateful job.

There were several types of rub rail with inserts which is why a picture is worth a thousand words. many are no longer made unless you can find something close. I can tell from a picture if you will send it to me at davecondon@mindspring.com

You will suffer more damage if you don't cover your boat. You will get clearer advise if you post pictures on this thread showing your problem. Did you mean that the hull is separating from the deck on the aft end and the two part rub rail assembly can't reattach because the screws won't stay in?

I purchased new rub rail a few years ago from Hunter and it didn't seem that expensive for the plastic mount and rubber insert (a couple hundred at the time). I can give you pointers regarding installation and have made many mistakes so am qualified to say this here and now: DON'T caulk the lower edge; this entraps water which will penetrate the wood gunwale core via screw holes. Be cautious installing the PROPER LENGTH screws- over drilling and/or power tool screw installation can penetrate the inner hull portion of the gunwale leading to water seepage into the boat (be it rainwater or from severe healing).

I was the largest small boat dealer for many years and repaired many but have retired. I will be glad to give you my experience and knowledge if you will provide me with a couple of pictures of the damaged area. If not, I will not venture out on how I would repair the damage. It is obvious you do not know me but I have contributed alot to this industry over the years.
