I only posted that page from Royce's book to show how to rig a downhaul and that a furler isn't "required or necessary" on a C22. Had nothing to do with weather or lee helm.
That downhaul arrangement was so superb I installed one my C25 and used it for the next 11 years. If you sail on port tack and then heave to, you can use the downhaul to drop the jib on the foredeck and because of the way hanks work, the sail is neatly folded and ready to be rolled up into a sailbag.
I never experienced lee helm and agree it would be weird. Only thing like it driving under a spinnaker - you want to turn the wrong way until you learn.
Did you drop the 110 on your C22 because of lee helm or weather helm Stu? I can't remember being on a boat with lee helm and can only imagine it to be very disconcerting.
