If you had a choice of homeports between Long Beach, Pass Christian, Bay of St. Louis, Waveland or Slidell.... where would you choose? I may be making a move from Pensacola soon. BrianW

I've had my boat at Oak Harbor Marina in slidell before. Good amenities and sailing on Lake Ponchartrain.

Marina

If you looking for a nice marina, the new municipal marina in Gulfport is as nice as anything on this part of the coast. Oak Harbor is nice too. Long Beach is kinda junky & funky. No knowledge of Pass Christian. I also like Point Cadet in Biloxi. All are priced pretty competitively, so money shouldn't enter the picture too much. I think for a marina, my first choice would have to be Gulfport.

Where are you going to be living? Waveland and Bay St Louis are a bit of a drive from either direction.

I kept my boat in the marina at Long Beach for a couple of years. Pass Christian was more of a shrimp boat harbor and it smelled like one.

That was all before Katrina and I have not been in any of the marinas ther in a year or so and I can't comment on the marinas I know Pass Christian got a butt load of money to buid a new complex.

The big difference is the location. Gulfport is closest to Ship Island, Long Beach is near Ship Island and real close to Cat Island. Pass Cristian is getting further away.

Re: Long Beach

Rick, I'm considering a job opportunity just north of I-10 near the MS/LA line and have not decided where to live. I figured that I may let my boat decide where I'll live. In other words, I may choose to live where is best sailing ground. BrianW

If sailing is a big priority

If the sailing is going to effect your decision, certainly I would look into the Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi areas. Lake Ponchatrain is good sailing, but Mississippi Sound is as good or better. In the sound you have the barrier islands, and easy access to going offshore.

I have been at Long Beach Harbor for 4 years now. Much of it has been redone. Piers, bulkheads, paving, launch ramps, etc. The harbormasters office is brand new. It also has a shower and bathrooms with a/c which are clean and well maintained that are available to slip renters. Each pier has a locking gate. The staff is friendly and walks each pier daily (appears morning and night) and will report anything unusual. I have taken many 2-3 night trips and never had a problem with leaving my truck there. Ice, new fuel dock and pumpout station. There is a bait shop, Steve's Marina restaurant and the Long Beach yacht club adjacent. In my experience, I can highly recommend it without reservation.

Pass Christian, as stated, is more of a working harbor. They are undergoing a major expansion that should be completed next year.

From link to 2010 story:
The work actually started three weeks ago. In just 16 months, a new 84,000 square foot harbor will accommodate more than 500 vessels with deeper channels, sea walls, massive parking lots, a comfort station and ice house.
Should change the face and culture significantly. Pass Christian yacht club there, and active sailing community also.

Not familiar with the Gulfport harbor, but it opened recently. Completely new and top notch from all appearances. It is pricey in comparison.

Best of luck.

I would also go for Long Beach Harbor. More sailboats, reasonable rates, new bathrooms and showers.

Stennis?

Living somewhere between Long Beach and Pass Christian would be good. Not a bad commute and far enough away from Gulfport to not be inconvenient. Long Beach did charge a different rate fepending on what county you lived in. Somthing to keep in mind as you make you decision.

What happened with your keel bolt replacement?

Rick, the keel boat replacement got delayed until economic conditions improved. The potential new job opportunity may just put me back on track! BrianW

You going to Sail it Over?

I know that is counting your chicken before they cross the road but let me know I am due for a boat trip.

I know how it works with a move I had lot's of offer to sail mine out this way but I ended up doing it on the trailer. Just not enough time and I was going to have to drag the trailer over anyway.

Good Luck with the job
