I have tried half a dozen forums related to this web site, and they all leave me asking, guess which forum? Not this one. Not that one. Maybe here? Maybe there? One says I can't be specific about a Mac26x question. One says it must be about sailing or anchoring or, well, you know. One is about Mac owners, but just don't get linked to a particular Mac boat. One says, just relate to the site with geek questions. I have a fairly new Mac25x and I ajust wanted to know if any MacOwner had tried the Schaefer snap furl roller reefing system? Or is the CDI the best? The former doesn't require a change in headstay length. Right? Any comments? How's that for sneaking a question into a "Guess which Forum?" Please, MacGregorOwners, steer me center channel.

I had a CDI on my previous 23 ft boat and I liked it, so when it came time to install one on my 27 ft Catalina, I said why not. I am a cruiser so my demands are not as great as a racer. I race with my friend and let him beat up his sails. I initally though of installing one myself and considered a Superfurl which you see advertised in Sail magazine; however, my rigger (New England Yacht Rigging) discounted the materials in a CDI and installed it at about the same price that it would cost me to purchase it at West Marine and install it myself. It suits my needs and I like the convience. My advice - check with your rigger before doing it yourself. The difference may not be worth it.

How big is your jib?
Stan, I have a Hunter 26 and just recently purchased a Schaefer Snapfurl. I corresponding with Dave Anderson at Schaefer before hand because they don't recommend the Snapfurl for any boat over 24'. It turns out that with the H26 having a smaller jib and only a 100% at that, the Snapfurl will be OK. I don't know about the Mac. Is it a masthead rig? How big of a jib do you run? It may be too large for the Snapfurl. Good Luck, Jim Covey

Stan, some folks prefer Fords, some like Chevys.
It comes down to "different strokes for different folks". Like boats themselves, they do pretty much the same thing in about the same way. Some cost a little more for various reasons. I don't think the Mac has any pecularities that would make one furler advantageous over the other. I think you are stuck in deciding which one is good for you (price, quality of construction, mode of operation, etc). Like Bob, I had a CDI on my previous boat (a Cat 22) -- it certainly did the job and it is about as cheap as the come. Even is guaranteed for life! On my current boat (Capri 26) its a Hood furler -- a little more furler for a little more money. Brad.
