Hope for The Warriors
Yes! It seems that there was an event on Thursday for "Hope for The Warriors". American Eagle, the boat that was sailed by Ted Turner in 1964, was supposedly in the race but I didn't notice her or get a photo. We just happened to be on a tour boat to see Narragansett Bay when we swung through Newport in the middle of this event. I was totally unprepared and could only manage a few photos with my cell phone.
It's funny that these boats looked rather unassuming out in the open water when they first appeared. Telephoto lenses make them look far more impressive when you see glossy photos. To my untrained eye, they didn't look very dramatic (however, exceedingly graceful) until they were slipping by at a good clip! They seemed to look smaller on the water than I would have expected, so I was caught a little unaware at first! Their sheer line is very low to the water. Columbia happened to be out in front of the pack as we were going by and I had a good look at her no more than 100 feet away, but, alas, no photo. My mouth was open and I was stunned to see so much sailing history gliding by in such close proximity.

Scott: How would you have liked to drive one of those boats?? A couple of years ago we were on a cruise and one of the stops was St Martens (sic) where one of the shore cruises was the America Cup boats. At the dock they asked for volunteers to be skipper so I raised my hand. They picked me and I got to pick the crew and I picked the biggest guys and gals I could see. Anyway, we complete the race and were about 4 miles out. I notice the actual skipper is eyeing and trying to talk to two cute blondes sitting by the mast so I asked him how these boats handle. He asked me if I knew how to sail and I told him I had a Catalina 30. With that he says why don't you take her back. I couldn't believe it and he hands the wheel over to me and he proceed to head to the mast while I sailed her back to the dock. The boats are all beat up from hard use but I didn't care.
What a thrill it was. Those boats are as agile as a race car. Last November we were in Auckland, NZ where they also have America Cup shore cruises and I was hoping to try the experience again but the weather was bad and they postponed the event.
