Hi, I'm installing a 400 watt power amp to my sound system in my 22 hunter and it is required to connect to a car chassis. If I just use the neg. terminal on the battery it still won't light up. Is there another way to get a good ground? I've got 4 marine battery's hooked up to a fuse box with nice fuses and battery switches but they all lead back to the neg. terminals on the battery's. Is there a way to increase my ground? Maybe connect the fuse box ground to the mast ground or my outboard?

My God, Why?

If you are that deaf get a hearing aid. If not, start shopping you are soon going to need one.

Chassis ground and battery ground same

Connecting to a car chassis and the negative terminal on a battery are one in the same. Your car's battery negative terminal is connected to the chassis and thereby being metal creats a circuit for everything elctrical on the car th have a ground by just connecting its ground to the chassis. I suspect you are running the stereo ground into a grounding circuit that is closed by some switch. Many switches permit circut flow by completing a circuit to ground. When off the circuit to ground is open. Hence, you may be attaching your stereo ground to the wrong side of a wire from a switch that goes to ground.

Sonar???

Grounding to a auto frame gives the same result as going to the neg battery terminal. 400 watt amp on a 22 foot boat??? Tom s/v GAIA

amplifier in sailboat

Well when I sail it gives me a chance to listen to music, and I want the full sound with the kickin bass. The darn speaker I bought requires a big amp for clean tones.I probably won't play it that much since I don't have an alt. or generator. At least you won't hear any Rap crap from my boat!

400 amps? I won't need my hearing aids

to hear it when you crank it up... and I sail on Lake Erie!!! Grins, Tom Ehmke

Neg. Ground?

The unit should work if connected to both Positive & Negative on a charged battery. If not, suspect faulty unit, or blown internal fuse. Regards, Gord

How in the heck are you going to charge it back up

after obliterating your batteries reserve power. It's going to take you weeks of run time with an outboard to re-charge. Stick to a deck with built in power (draws between .5 and 2 amps)!! I installed a 100 X 2 amp on my last boat but removed it when I connected an ammeter to it and found that at a medium to low volume I was drawing almost 6 amps!!!! I currently use an Eclipse (50wats X 4) deck with Boston Acoustics 6" speakers in the cabin and 6" Pioneers in the cockpit. The system sounds great for a sail boat. If I want high fidelity I'll listen to my Mark Levinson / B&W home stereo. Don't waste your time with that amp put it in your car!!!! -Rodd C.

I hope that you realize that to power up

the power amp, you need to hook up the power up circuit from the stereo. Even though the amp is grounded, it needs a start up pulse voltage.

I returned the amp to the store

Well I took your advice and returned the amp. I decided to use the rear outputs of the cd/radio with the highs and mids cut for the sub woofers. I did have to buy another sub speaker to balance out the ohms though. In the long run I shouldn't have to worry about draining my battery's as bad. The matched pair of speakers sound great. I never could get the amp to kick on by the way, and after I realized how much of a drain the amp would be, and how particular the amp was in the OVER protection mode,I exchanged it for another speaker. I did hook it up according to the manual. Thanks for your responses!

just be courtious

Remember, not everyone shares your taste in music. Be courtious to your neighbors who might want to enjoy a little peace and quiet while sailing. After all, the noise from the cigarette boats is irritating enough without having to listen to someone elses music.
