Well, I am now a member of the grounded squad. This past Saturday was a great day to be out on the lake (78 degrees winds 10 - 20) and my wife and I took full advantage. We sailed to the south end and turned around to sail up to the north end of the lake. We have only had the boat 6 mos. had had not had her to this part of the lake. I did sail the north end frequently in my Cat22. My wife was at the wheel when we felt a nudge from below and a slow but complete stop. We both looked at each other and in unison let out a loud "oh s###!" I asked her the depth and she said 5feet to which I knew the results. We did get backed out of the soft sandy bottom and headed in another direction towards the marina. Afterwards we laughed at our mistakes, talked about what happened and realized that we had gotten lost in our total enjoyment of each other, the boat, and the water. we also realized that we had been over this spot many times in our Cat22 (no depth meter) but never really knew the true depth of the water. I told her I had read many times on this foroum that there were two kinds of sailors, those that admitted to grounding and those that did not. I am just thankful it was a soft bottom.

The Question Should Be Re-Worded to...

..., "Who among us HAVE grounded their boats at one time or other?"

I HAVE...

...in a channel and in 5' of water. The charts didn't show it, but a local sailed by as I was kedging off and told me to move 15' in the opposite direction. I did and went into 18' of water *o *o. This occurred in the Peconics on the west side of Shelter Island, LI, NY in West Neck Harbor as I was attempting to follow the "reds" out of the harbor. Fortunately, if was a soft, mud bottom!

If you haven't been aground...

... in the notoriously shallow Chesapeake Bay, you haven't left your slip. Fortunately, the bay bottom is mostly soft mud or sand, perhaps like Cedar Creek Lake. There is only one rock in the Bay, and all the bay sailors know where it is....;)

For Jim Seamans

Here 'tis: 39 deg 10' 25"N 76 deg 29' 20"W Technically, this in the Patapsco, but like all the major rivers into the Bay, like where you are on the Potomac, I consider it all part of the bay proper.... How has that "Florida Room" on your boat worked out?

If it weren't for seagulls...

that rock would be dangerous at night when when heading back to the creek (assuming you can't see the nav marks!)... LOL!

Getting stuck

Hi Robert, The thing about the internet is that postings like yours get seen by many people and passed around! A little bird from across the country told me about your tale so I had to take a look. Many times I have seen good sailers on our lake stuck in the mud in places that were once navigable, and will be again at another time! My thoughts are always, "There but for the grace of Neptune go I." Like you, I am learning some things going from a 5'2" draft to a 5'10" draft. We actually got stuck twice, in the marina, on the maiden voyage of our new boat. Glad to see you are enjoying the boat. Merry Christmas! Jim

Jim!

Good morning. The internet is a good thing when not used for evil!!!! How are you? Jayne and I were the only sail boat out last Saturday. The weather was really good and we had a blast, except for one little thing. We nudged the bottom in an area we used to sail our Cat22. Never knew the depth. We were about 1/4 mile from the shore line. I am guessing it was a sand bar. We were slow moving when we grounded and you could feel the boat contacting the bottom. I was really impressed with how we could feel everything as it was happening. I think Jayne was more worried than I. Looks like we are going to have to winterize the water system this Friday as the temps will dip below 30 on Sunday. Have a great day. Robert
